It’s been a few weeks since my last post. I’m still crocheting. I’m still participating in #52weeksofcrochet, which is easy since it is a creation of my own (haha). This is how it’s going:

New Yarn Stash Additions

I’ve been buying yarn! I got a delightful package from Hobbii. I bought selections from Friends Cotton 8/4 and Happy Place. I took a video of my “unboxing” of the yarn. I need to learn to edit (and video), but here’s a rough view of what I got.

I’ve Started a New Project

I started this popular heart sweater by Chenda DIY. I first stumbled across it on Reddit and since then have seen several variations on the pattern across Reddit and Pinterest. Typically it’s done in 2-3 colors. I chose to do it in a solid color and allow the texture to come through. I’m using Hobbii’s Friends Cotton 8/4 in Bottle Green and a 4.0 mm Clover Amour hook. I think this yarn will make a lightweight sweater with a nice drape. The size in the video is smaller than I need to fit me. I find the instructions to be generally clear, but a bit ambiguous for beginners who need to size it up or down. I’m going to have to experiment a bit to make it a size medium-large enough fit me.

I had a rough start! I spent over a week trying to master row one. I frogged it about two dozen times (no exaggeration here!) before I was satisfied enough to move beyond the first two rows. It’s still not perfect (especially the center of hearts) but perfect is the enemy of done and I’m pretty sure I’ll be making this sweater again. I finished the majority of the first panel and have started the second panel for the front and back of the sweater. The second time through went much faster. I’m enjoying the pattern and I’d like to try it again, this time with 2-3 colors and with a slightly thicker and softer yarn. I think Hobbii’s Happy Place collaboration with Toni Lipsey would be a great yarn for this sweater. A combination of the solid and melange for a cozy gradient could be delightful.

I Still Haven’t Finished My Basket

I knew when I started that finishing would always be the hardest. I like being in the middle of project, starting and finishing are the hardest parts. I’ll get to this though. I promise!

How to Make a New Habit?

Have you heard the advice that if you want to make a new habit you need to tie it to an existing habit? Well, I think I’ve done that because I have a hard time watching television without a hook in my hand. As habits go, it’s far from the worst one I could pick up. An upside has been that I have also spent fewer hours scrolling on my phone. The downside is that I made an incredible amount of progress. I’m at the mercy of the shipping gods while I wait for new yarn to arrive so I can start my next project.

I’ve Learned a Few Things

I need multiple projects. When I realized I was nearly through with the rounds I had a mild panic about what I was going to do next. Just as I am a reader who can’t have any less than five books in progress, I’m going to be the crocheter who needs multiple WIPs.

I’m picky about yarn. My other fiber arts hobby is punch needle. I have a lot of yarn leftover from kits and that I’ve bought in attempts to design my own project. I don’t think punch needle design is my strength. Or I haven’t cracked it yet. So when I was feeling anxious about what to do next, I pulled out my stash. It was enlightening to feel yarns of different weights and textures and try a few stitches with my hook.

I absolutely hated a 100% acrylic yarn from my stash. It was soft to the touch, but too slippery and squishy to work with. It both fell about and knotted easily. I’m not sure what I’ll do with it, but it’s not meant for crochet. Not without pairing it with another yarn at least. So far I love wool and wool blends. I played around with some wool roving that might find it’s way into a home decor project. Maybe pot holders. It had a smooth feel but with enough friction that I enjoyed touching it. I also played with a 100% cotton baby yarn. I liked the way the cotton feels, but that yarn is so thin it was hard to work with. I’m just now a little nervous because my next project involves fingering yarn. Fingers crossed, I like it.

I really love Lion Brand’s Hue + Me and I just discovered that it’s a collaboration with Two of Wands who has some amazing looking patterns I’m excited to try out. Unless I get distracted, I’ll be trying a Two of Wands project very soon.

I Also Bought New Hooks!

These were purchased from JoAnn with a 40% off coupon. Usually this set goes for about $89 so I felt good about what I paid. My first hook was from my Woobles project. I bought 6.5 mm and 9 mm when Clover Amour hooks when started the Fireside Basket. I told myself not to invest in a set before I needed a hook in the standard collection. My next project (more on that to come!) will need hooks. So this really must become a new habit, because it’s not cheap! I got to stick with this.

My new crochet hooks!

Almost Done!

Here’s how my Fireside Basket is looking. If you need a reminder, here’s how it started. You’ll get a full reveal with the completed fringe detail. I have a few takeaways from this project that I’ll save for the reveal. In the meantime, I can’t believe what I’ve done so far!

A little wobbly but it stands on it’s own. Mostly.

I’m Still Crocheting

Did you hear that? I’m still crocheting. Welcome to Week 2 of 52 Weeks of Crochet. I am finding my groove plus ruminations on creating a world that fits me through craft.

I picked up speed after getting through last weeks untangled mess. What I didn’t show you last week was how I kept it from tangling. Where there’s a will there’s a way. My way was taping the ends to PVC pipes (that have artwork rolled up inside — that’s for another project) and then rolling the yarn onto them. Then I took the taped ends to create my double strand and pulled the yarn off the tubes. I am now better at handling the skeins early on. I’m still getting tangles, but nothing resembling this and nothing that a patient five minutes can’t handle. I think my next investment into the fiber arts should be getting a yarn winder so I can avoid tangling skeins and hanks. Untangling wastes so much time.

Creating a World That Fits Me: A Few Things from the Week

This week I came across a recent Therapy for Black Girls podcast episode on sewing. The guest spoke about the intersection of sewing (or craft) and liberation. Much of the message could easily be applied to crochet. It also made me think about practical ways to include sewing in my crochet projects. Or maybe finally making good use of the sewing machine I occasionally breakout and half to relearn how to use each time. I like the idea of having more clothing that reflects my size and my taste and creating the home decor items that fit my taste exactly. I like the idea of creating a world that fits me through craft.

This week I’ve been conscious about carving out time to crochet. I like having a show to watch while I work. This week’s choice has been about 1.5-2 episodes of Star Trek: Picard, which equals about two hours of crochet every night. I’ve made so much progress this way and it’s been a good way to wind down. After my evening activities, dinner, and any other chores I need to do, I’ll sit down by 8:00 or 9:00 PM and I’ll work until it’s time for bed. I’ve noticed that despite still having a screen (my laptop), I spend less time on my phone and by not being in my bedroom, I’m not desensitized to my bed being a place for sleep. I’m already looking forward this ritual and I’ve only been doing it about a week.

So there you have it! My second week of crochet complete. I’m over half-way through the project. I can’t wait to tell you about what I’ve learned along the way and share the finished object.

An Aside

After so many years with housemates, I’ve gotten in the habit of spending a lot of time in my bedroom when I needed alone or “winding down” time. I’m finally in a home with multiple rooms that can be assigned different purposes and I find that my habit is still to relax in my bed. I’m trying to break that habit and key to my success so far has been making my living area a cozy place to be. The recent addition of a new blanket and rug have helped a lot. The next step is a second table lamp and to put up art. Maybe I’ll share my space when it’s complete.

This week I went from magic circle success to tangled yarn defeat. When I saw TL Yarn Crafts’ tutorial for making her Fireside Basket, I immediately wanted to make one for myself. It’s a simple but elegant home decor piece that’s also a good beginner project. I decided this would be a great project to start during the holidays and I one that would be fun to start over the holidays. Toni of TL Yarn Crafts is an excellent teacher and her instructions for the magic ring are the clearest I’ve found. Go check out TL Yarn Crafts.

Getting Started

The body will be in the Lion Brand’s Hue + Me Mustard and the detail will be in in the same brand in Bellini and I’m currently using a Clover Amour crochet hook in 9.00 mm (M/N-13) for the main body. The instructions say I’ll eventually need a 6.5 mm (J-10.5) hook for the detail. I bought everything from JoAnn. I used the app to order the yarn and hooks I needed and everything was available to pick up at the two locations I selected. In store pick-up was a smart decision because when I visited JoAnn on the day before Christmas Eve and a Friday, I found that the roads were especially busy and the stores were low on stock because of holiday shopping. Thankfully, there are two stores in my near vicinity so between those two locations, I was able to find and purchase everything I needed to get started.

Progress So Far

The first few days of the project were great. Smooth sailing. Toni’s instructions were so clear and easy to follow. I got into a rhythm of counting and marking my progress. It was perfect for my holiday binge of Star Trek: The Next Generation. I felt confident and proficient at the required stitches so I was able to concentrate on how I’m holding the hook and the tension on the yarn. Then I hit a snag.

Crocheted round work in progress on top of basket
Current WIP! This is the base of a basket.

Tangled Yarn

The yarn is doubled so I pulling from both ends. This means that to reach one of the ends, I have to pull out the center of skein. This easily tangled. The first skein was fine, but soon into the second skein the tangles got out of control and whatever I did made it worse. It soon became demoralizing.

Tangled ball of yellow yarn.
Help!

(By the way, this is my very first YouTube video. It’s very simple and unedited. I didn’t even add an intro or filter or anything to it. Thanks for joining me on this ride!)

Ugh. So Finally, I was able to untangle the massive ball of mess. It took about two hours and the stubbornness of a friend to unravel the ball of tangled yarn. We ended up cutting the yarn so I could reattach the yarn once entangled or join a new skein. Currently I have the yarn wrapped around two PVC tubes that have art prints rolled up inside, but they are perfect for holding my yarn until I figure out how to keep it from tangling again. I’ll need to use it eventually.

With tangled yarn behind me, I hope to pick up momentum this week. I’m considering whether crochet will be like reading. I typically have 5-10 books in progress at any given time, plus an audiobook or two. If it is, then there’s a sweater that I have in mind that would be perfect for Valentine’s.

If you missed the whys and wherefores for this yearlong venture into crochet, check out my previous post.

What is 52 Weeks of Crochet? Let me start with some backstory! Several years ago a creative friend introduced me to The 100 Day Project. I painted a a 4×4 painting every day for 100 days and posted them to Instagram. I was a graduate student with fairly grueling schedule so this would often be the last thing I’d do at night after a full day of classes, studying, and work. I’ve never taken any instruction in painting so it was a learning through discovery situation.

I’m still a novice at best and I’ve rarely picked up a paintbrush since, but it was one of the most rewarding creative endeavors I’ve undertaken. It was also a fun way to connect with creative friends and share something that was enjoyable to me. Graduate school can be a bit a soul suck and creative activities have always been part of my mental health or self care practice. Naturally, I’ve wanted to do another 100 day project ever since.

My 100 Day Project

That was in 2016. Since then I’ve undertaken other creative activities including several years of pottery, attempts at punch needle, two NaNoWriMos, and a creative writing class. Pottery was messy and expensive and it got more challenging to get into the studio after the pandemic started. Now I have boxes of ugly ceramics that I’m not sure what to do with them. I’m too much of a perfectionist to want to give most of it away, let alone sell it. Punch needle is fun, but unwieldy and not always as portable as I’d like. I love creative writing, but it can be solitary and isolating and mentally draining when it’s not going well. I’ve been seeking a creative outlet that is easy to contain, portable, and easy on the mind.

In the spirit of The 100 Day Project and my desire to take on a new creative outlet, I’m excited to announce my 52 Weeks of Crochet Project!

Why Crochet?

A few weeks ago I started amigurumi kit by The Woobles. You can find my first impressions review here. Keep watch for a full review in the future! I don’t think amigurumi will be my thing, but it was an excellent self contained introduction to crochet. More on that another time. What I do know is I enjoy the calm of finding a rhythm in in the stitches, and it’s so versatile. I’m most excited to learn how to make wearables like sweaters and shawls, and home decor like blankets and coasters. To stick with the project I need it to be packable. I can crochet from my sofa or just before bed. I can also crochet on the plane or on a car ride. Finally, I’ve always been fascinated with fiber arts and surprisingly crochet is one I’ve not tried yet so I’m excited to develop the skill.

Why 52 Weeks of Crochet?

As a beginner, one hundred days could be how long it takes me to complete a project. I want to ensure that I don’t get into a rut and I also know you don’t want to see 100 days of double crochet on a single project. By allowing more time and focusing on weeks instead of days, my goal is to share more projects and progress overtime.

I also know that daily postings are going to be hard to keep up. Instagram is date for quick posts, but a blog requires a long form approach. I’m intentionally blogging on this site, instead of Instagram, because I want to experiment with sharing on a platform that allows greater ownership over the content I share. I can tell longer stories here, embed more videos, photos, and links, and it can be free of the distraction I often experience on social media. I’m hopeful that I can experiment along with way with different ways of sharing my crochet progress.

What’s Next?

I’m going to be crocheting! My goal is to share my progress here at least once a week. I invite you to check in on me and see how I’m doing with my 52 Weeks of Crochet Project!

The algorithm got me. I’ve had a long time interest in fiber arts. I’ve dabbled in hook rugs and punch needle, and I’ve tried knitting before (too many things to keep track of!). Punch needle has probably been my most successful foray into yarn.

I had only passing familiarity with amigurumi, Japanese art of crocheting or knitting little creatures and objects. Like all other crochet art, it seemed like a complicated craft. But the social media ads from The Woobles sucked me in! I realized that not only would I end up with a cute stuffy. I’d have real skills that could translate into other crochet projects like blankets and sweaters. I was sold. This is my First Impressions Review as a crochet beginner.

What I’m loving about Woobles

I picked the Limited Edition Retro Rainbow Revelers bundle with the sweetest dino, narwhal, and unicorn. There are so many options and variations for everyone like this cute pig and his flying friends or this fearsome Voldemort and Nagini. Each comes with enough frayles yarn for the project, a hook, markers, stuffing, a yarn needle, and a QR code for instructions.

The instructional videos are easy to detailed and easy to follow. Each step has it’s own segment so it’s easy to skip to whichever step you’re own or rewatch a step. I’ve watched them on my laptop and my cell phone. I didn’t need a special app or download.

Woobles Kit Cost

It’s a great entry level for a beginner who is unsure about their commitment to a new hobby. I have been known to enthusiastically dive into a new hobby only to get distracted after awhile. Gathering tools can be time consuming and expensive, especially when one ends up with excess craft supplies they have no plans for. This amigurumi kit provides only the necessary tools and it eliminates the difficult chore of tracking down and selecting the appropriate supplies. In fact, if you don’t need the 4.5 mm crochet hook, you can place an order without it. This also makes it a great gift to a crafter friend who’ll enjoy a quick project. Starting at $25 dollars, it’s an moderately priced kit and if you know you want to try several, there are also several themed bundles available at a small discount. While an accomplished crocheter might not need little things like markers or a needle, this kit is accessible so a novice maker gets only what they need to complete the craft without having to invest in pricey tools and materials like new crochet hooks or skeins of yarn. So while $25 may be a lot for someone who just wants a cute pattern for a new toy, it’s a bargain for another person unsure how committed they will be to a new crochet hobby.

My progress so far as a crochet beginner

It’s coming along nicely!

The verdict on Woobles

Buy a kit from The Woobles and try for yourself. An experienced crocheter may find the supplies redundant or have a preferred yarn, but if you are new to crochet or just want a fun contained project then this is a great option.

I have read a lot of blog posts and watched a lot of YouTube videos about how to start a blog. At some point it all becomes both an obviously simple and mind numbingly daunting fete.

Since summer of 2022 I’ve been actively reading and watching videos on the topic. Since November 2022 I’ve had an unpublished website. Today, on January 7, 2023, is as good as any day to get real with myself about why I haven’t published a single article. At the crux of my procrastination are three truths:

1. This Blog Will Be Terrible

In researching how to start a blog, I’ve definitely heard many seasoned bloggers provide this cold-hard truth. As a perfectionist, I need to embrace this and not let my perfectionism stop me from creating. I know factually that there are few things anyone is immediately great at. The most some of us can aspire to on our first try is “promising”. The difference between someone who gives up after the first try and success is consistent practice. Check out this video of Ed Sheeran on Then Jonathan Ross Show many years ago.

Ed Sheeran could be anyone talking about any creative endeavor or skill, but the willingness to be vulnerable enough to share the imperfection and demystify the process stands out to me. I know he isn’t the first or the last to do this so I encourage you to find the role model that resonates with you. I have to realize that while I may never be the Ed Sheeran (or insert favorite artist here) of blogging, I will also never be able to call myself a blogger if I don’t try. I have to figure out how to start a blog. In short: don’t let perfect be the enemy of good.

2. I’ve Yet to Find My Blogging Voice

Even once I pass the threshold from terrible or decent, it will still be super easy for me to get distracted or discouraged by other creators whose combination of content, skill, design, intellect, and other resources invested produce a better blog than mine. There’s always going to be someone who is a better writer, better photographer, has more engaging stories, a more compelling product, and understands the technical analytics behind a successful blog. It’s also hard to see beautiful content that I aspire to make and see how it is so out of reach for me with limited talent. Focusing on what I’m not yet, can suck the joy and discovery out the process.

The reality is that part of success is knowing who I am and what I bring to the table and delivering on that. But I don’t know who I am as a blogger yet. I think I know what I want this to be, but honestly I have a hard time articulating it right now. I know that I want to share what I’m making to create a meaningful and beautiful life around me and I want to encourage and empower you to do the same. Part of that work and that journey is finding my voice. When I do, I hope my message becomes more articulate and comes through clearly to you. I hope that you recognize me for what I uniquely am and not a parody of what others are doing.

TLDR: Grow where you’re planted. Comparison is the thief of joy.

3. I Might Quit This Blog

I have been interested in storytelling from my earliest memories. When we were little, I would tell my little sister a bedtime story every night. I have enjoyed writing since I learned to put pencil to paper. In sixth grade I began journaling at the behest of my sixth grade teacher, Mrs. Lang. I’ve continued to journal nearly every day of my life since about age 13. My seventh and eighth grade teacher, Mrs. Thompson, is the first person I recall telling me that I wrote well. I have had a creative writing hobby of some sort since middle grade. During college and graduate skill I developed a skill in academic writing. I have been a professional grant writer and in my current career I write hundreds of email a week. Like many people, I maintain strong friendships through text messages that are detailed and abundant.

I write a lot, but outside of journaling and assigned work, I’m not that consistent with my practice. What I failed to mention above is how many times I’ve tried to figure out how to start a blog. Each time I start only to get hung up on how bad it is or what I want to say. I have a lot of first drafts floating around on hard drives of old computers. It’s disappointing when I think about about much progress I could have made had a I stuck with one of my first tries in the 2000s. But, upon reflection, each time it’s been a little better. I am making progress! This time can be different.

The take home: If at first you don’t succeed, try try again.

Lined journal open to a blank page. On the page is a yellow #2 pencil, pencil sharpener, and pencil shavings. How to write.

But All Is Not Lost

Here’s the thing. Today I showed up! A word I’m embracing this year is consistency. I can get beyond my procrastination and out of my head by showing up regularly to make this the space I dream of. I hope you join and watch me figure out how to start this blog, but I also understand if you’re not quite ready for that journey. Maybe in a time not too long from now I’ll have figured this out. Can’t wait to see you then!
